Leading a movement to improve lives. Pure and simple.
At NxStage, we are leading a movement to transform renal care. To make it simpler. To make it portable. To expand treatment options for clinicians by overcoming traditional barriers. To enhance patient freedom and fulfillment.

The need for such a movement is clear and compelling:

  • More than 1.7 million people worldwide, including 453,000 in the U.S. (in 2003), suffer from End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)1. Yet fewer than 30% of ESRD patients in the U.S. currently have a functioning kidney transplant. As a result, nearly 325,000 U.S. patients receive routine dialysis treatments to treat their kidney failure2. In addition, more than 200,000 people annually in the U.S. suffer from acute kidney failure.
  • Existing treatment approaches—Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) and Hemodialysis (HD)—have been effective at sustaining ESRD patients, but have limitations. Traditional hemodialysis equipment has been designed for use in outpatient dialysis clinics, and is not designed for the home setting. Peritoneal dialysis has historically provided the most viable home dialysis alternative, but utilization of this therapy has not grown in recent years.
  • Despite improvements to dialysis technologies—including high flux dialyzers, improved water purification and improved vascular access—mortality rates in the U.S. have not improved.
  • The number of U.S. ESRD patients continues to grow at 5% annually3 —yet the number of nephrologists and nurses available to treat them is decreasing.4,5
  • Many clinicians agree with the large and growing body of data showing that more frequent, or "daily", dialysis and dialysis done at home lead to significant improvements in patients' health and quality of life, yet these therapies have not grown to their potential due to the limitations of the conventional dialysis clinic schedule and of conventional equipment.

The time has come for a better approach. NxStage is leading the way, joining with clinicians, patients and other stakeholders to realize a new era in renal care, one in which…

…renal care delivery is simpler, reducing caregiver workload and making dialysis therapy less resource-intensive.

…daily home dialysis is truly accessible, giving ESRD patients improved health and greater control over their treatment and their lives.

…patients are free to travel, opening the door to fulfilling life experiences for ESRD patients, while continuing to receive the renal care they need to stay healthy.

…clinicians have greater treatment flexibility, with access to innovative treatment options they know will benefit their patients.

As more people learn about the advances that are transforming renal care and recognize their potential for improving patients' lives, a movement is growing.

NxStage is proud to be a leader in that movement. We invite you to learn how we're doing it.
