Board of Directors

Philippe Chambon, MD, Ph.D.
Chairman
Philippe Chambon is a Managing Director and founder of New Leaf Venture Partners, a spin-off from The Sprout Group.  He joined Sprout in May 1995 and became a General Partner in January 1997.  He invests broadly in healthcare technology companies.  He currently is on the board of Auxilium Pharmaceuticals (AUXL) and PharSight (PHST) as well as several private companies.

Previously, Philippe served as Manager in the Healthcare Practice of The Boston Consulting Group from May 1993 to April 1995. From September 1987 to April 1993, he was an executive with Sandoz Pharmaceutical, where he led strategic product development, portfolio management and pre-marketing activities in his capacity as Executive Director of New Product Management. Philippe did graduate research in molecular immunology at The Pasteur Institute and earned a MD, Ph.D. from the University of Paris. He also has an MBA from Columbia University in New York.

Jeffrey H. Burbank
President & Chief Executive Officer
Jeff is NxStage’s Founder, President and Chief Executive Officer, and is a member of its Board of Directors. Jeff has over 20 years of in-depth management experience with companies developing, marketing and manufacturing products for End Stage Renal Disease patients. He has led NxStage since its inception, guiding it through all of its developmental phases to the successful initiation of commercial activity, its initial public offering and the recent acquisition of Medisystems. Prior to founding NxStage, he co-founded Vasca, Inc., a company providing innovative implantable access devices, where he was the President and CEO, as well as Chairman of the Board. He gained significant renal industry experience during his nine years at Gambro, Inc., in the Renal Division, with his last position as Director of Marketing and Advanced Technologies. During his career he has been an inventor on 50 U.S. patents for medical devices.

Jeff received his BS in Industrial Engineering from Lehigh University.

Daniel A. Giannini, CPA
Daniel, an executive advisor at the Advanced Technology Development Center of the Georgia Institute of Technology, has served as a director of NxStage since October 2005 and is a member of the Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee. He retired in June 2005 after a more than 30-year career as a Certified Public Accountant with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, most recently as an audit partner. He led the Technology, Information, Communications, and Entertainment practice at the firm’s Atlanta office. Daniel received a BS in Business Administration from LaSalle University.

Earl R. Lewis
Mr. Lewis is the current Chairman, President and CEO of Flir Systems Inc. (NYSE: FLIR), a manufacturer of thermal imaging and infrared camera systems. Previously, he served as CEO and President at Thermo Instrument Systems, Inc. He also served Thermo in various executive capacities, including President and Chief Operating Officer, CEO and President of Thermo Optek Corp., and President of Thermo Jarrell Ash Corp. Mr. Lewis is also a member of the board of directors for Harvard Bio Science and American DG Energy.

Craig Moore
Craig has held a number of executive positions in the healthcare industry, including Chairman of the Board and CEO at Everest Healthcare Services Corporation prior to its acquisition by Fresenius Medical Care, Executive Vice President at Everest Healthcare, Division President of American Micro-Surgery Specialties at Baxter Healthcare Corporation, and Director for Biologic Systems Corporation.

Reid S. Perper
Reid has served as a director of NxStage since September 2005. Since May 2004, Reid has been a Managing Director of Healthcare Investment Partners LLC. Previously, he was a Managing Director and Co-Head of Europe for CSFB Private Equity. Prior to joining CSFB, he was a Managing Director of DLJ Merchant Banking Partners, the private equity arm of Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette.  Reid joined Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette in 1988.

Jonathan Silverstein
Jonathan is a General Partner at OrbiMed, an asset management firm solely focused in healthcare with several billion in assets under management. Mr. Silverstein joined OrbiMed in 1998 to focus on private equity investments and structured transactions of small-capitalization public biotechnology and medical device companies. Prior to joining OrbiMed, Mr. Silverstein was the Director of Life Sciences in the Investment Banking Department at Sumitomo Bank. Currently, Mr. Silverstein is the Chairman of Cerapedics, Gelesis and Enobia, and a director of superDimension, Ltd. He has been a former director or observer in an additional dozen companies including: Insulet Corporation (PODD), LifeCell (sold to KCI), Given Imaging (GIVN), Cerexa (sold to Forest Labs), Peninsula Pharmaceuticals (sold to Johnson & Johnson), Predix (sold to EPIX), Avanir (AVNR), Orthovita (VITA), Auxillium (AUXL), Bioenvision (sold to Genzyme), Adiana (sold to Cytyc), and Emphasys Medical. Mr. Silverstein has a B.A. in Economics from Denison University and a J.D. and M.B.A. from the University of San Diego.

David S. Utterberg
Between 1981 and 2007, David served as the Chief Executive Officer, President and sole stockholder of Medisystems Corporation, which was acquired by NxStage, together with certain affiliated entities, on October 1, 2007. He presently serves as the President and Director of Lifestream Medical Corporation, a medical device company, as well as the President, Director and Chairman of DSU Medical Corporation ("DSU"). DSU holds and licenses over 90 U.S. and foreign patents and other intellectual property in medical technology focused on extracorporeal therapy devices. He was also a director of Vasca, Inc., a medical device company that developed and marketed a blood access device for dialysis patients.
