Michael Copland graduated from the University of British Columbia Medical School in 1995 and went on to complete his Internal Medicine Residency and Subspecialty training in Nephrology at UBC. He joined the Staff at Vancouver General Hospital in 2000 and remains active as an Attending Physician in the Division of Nephrology. He is a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of British Columbia.
Dr. Copland has a number of administrative roles beyond his clinical work. He is the British Columbia Provincial Medical Director for Independent Hemodialysis and the Medical Director, Kidney Services for Vancouver Coastal Health Authority and Providence Healthcare. He carries a number of other regional and provincial administrative portfolios as well.
Dr. Copland’s clinical interest primarily includes the provision of home‐based dialysis modalities. He is particularly interested in healthcare system designs to facilitate these modalities. He maintains a full clinical role beyond his home dialysis work in the area of general consultative nephrology.
His research activities have largely focused around collaborative research programs both nationally in Canada and internationally. His research focus is largely pertaining to independent dialysis modalities When Dr. Copland is not supervising dialysis, he can often be found on his road bike or paddling his ocean kayak with his wife and 2 children in the Vancouver area.
